The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
