Tetris Couldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Each time a prominent honors show nears, you'll find a clamor to include fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the hearts of followers with niche passions.

A fellow writer made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types actually cover many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category in 2014
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored that year
  • Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
