Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the right to contest particular decisions made by the official, following the practice already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can request.

Case in Point

A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
